20th Century Studios seem to have had high hopes for The First Omen, but unfortunately it appears it hasn’t delivered.
Despite a massive promotional push, and being quite the critical darling, the prequel finished below initial estimates on its opening weekend.
Originally slated to bring in $15 million domestically, estimates were slashed when The First Omen managed only $3 million on its first day.
Ultimately, the prequel did exceed its new domestic estimates, finishing over the $8 million top end. However, the fact 20th Century Studios lowered the estimates didn’t go unnoticed. The First Omen would finish 4th in the domestic box-office stakes, behind newcomer Monkey Man, and holdovers Ghostbusters and Godzilla x Kong.
However, the prequel fared much better internationally, taking in $9.1 million. This results in a $17.5 million final tally, which is still quite a way off the $30 million budget.
Despite underperforming, the movie has gone over well with both audiences and critics. Currently sitting at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, The First Omen has been praised for its performances and story, with fans declaring it the best in the series since 1978’s Damien: Omen II.
So, although not making the expected amount, it’s possible The First Omen could be a sleeper hit, or perhaps somewhat of a cult movie, should it become popular on home media. Only time will tell.
