A bad moon is officially on the rise over at Blumhouse Productions, as filming on Wolf Man has begun! The news was confirmed by Blumhouse and Universal Pictures via a photo posted to social media.
The long-in-gestation project is finally before the cameras after a decade in development hell. After a particularly turbulent last few months, it’s comforting to know Wolf Man is finally a functioning production that is one more step towards completion.
Initially greenlit in 2020, the project was to be the next step in the down-sized rebooting of Universal’s Classic Monsters. Following the success of Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, he was tapped to pen the script.
Eventually, Ryan Gosling was announced to produce and star in the project, with Derek Cianfrance directing. However, November 2023 brought us the news that Gosling and Cianfrance had departed the project, yet an October 2024 release date was then announced.
Since then, Leigh Whannell has assumed the directing duties, Gosling has been replaced by Christopher Abbott, and Julia Garner has been cast in a leading role.
Garner, a hot commodity in Hollywood following multiple Emmy wins, will play the mother of a family stalked by a dangerous predator. Abbott will play her husband, but it is currently unknown if he will also be the titular creature.
After so many changes in a short period of time, it was feared the project would be delayed, or cancelled altogether. However, with cameras now rolling, it looks as if Universal’s longed-for Monsterverse reboot is safe once more.
Still, little is known about Wolf Man besides these few key details. Undoubtedly, we’ll learn more as we approach its October 25th release date, so stay tuned!
